Eric and Gabby joined us on our trip to
Nicaragua. It was dark by the time we crossed
the Peñas Blancas border and the
police warned us not to stop for anybody
while driving. So, we drove straight to
San Juan del Sur and found Ricardo's bar,
as recommended by the Lonely Planet guide
book. Ricardo's recommended Playa Majagual
for camping, but it had burned down, so
we ended up camping down the road at Playa
Madual. Madual wasn't the typical surf camp
as it was full of lesbian couples who had
recently come from a rainbow festival. With
the wierd vibe and no waves, we headed north
to Salinas.
Salinas is located about a mile inland
from the pacific ocean and the locals farm
salt in large square beds. We followed directions
to the beach and found Gloria's bar at the
end of the road in Popoyo. Gloria let us
camp for free, just a few feet from the
beach, in exchange for buying beers at her
bar. The upper left pictures shows local
transportation parked next to our camp site
at Gloria's. It's rumored that Alemagne,
the President of Nicaragua, is planning
to build a house near Popoyo, so this break
might be hard to reach in the future.
In search of more surf breaks, we found
Rancho Santana guarded by security. However,
they let us through the gates to check out
Playa Santa Rosa and we found paradise.
Rancho Santana is a gated community with
beautiful properties stretching over seven
miles of virgin beaches and beautiful reefs.
With interest in buying one of the few remaining
lots, we ended up staying with Manuel who
runs the Oxford
Country Club (above right). While Gabby
and I layed around the beautiful pool Marty
and Eric surfed the chilly waters.
