Trip Log:   June 16 - Aug. 8th: Haymarket, Virginia to Troy, New York

Back Forward
6/16/01 Paul, Lori & Elena's Place, Haymarket, Virginia, USA
Building Mad Max. In preparation for the big trip, we added a heavy-duty, custom roof rack to Rover. The rack provides extra storage as well as a place to sleep away from critters and bear. Marty cut the steel bars.
Our neighbor, Paul, who is a welding expert, helped us add custom features like the side tire mount (removed from Rover's rear door), a bike rack and pole holes at the front and the rear for making a mosquito net or canvas tent that can be staked to the ground for shade.
6/26 - 7/28 The Marcinczyk's, Bayville & Beachwood, New Jersey, US
Preparing to leave. After selling our house in Virginia we headed to New Jersey to see our family, lighten the load and get organized. After a few weeks of Rover stalling intermittently at low speeds, Marty repaired the speedometer cable, of all things, to solve the problem. He replaced all of Rover's belts and installed a new water pump with the help of Jeremy. Marty then filled the bottom of the roof rack with a heavy piece of aluminum specially cut with a sun roof above the driver's and passenger's seats. We also geared up with Plexiglass for the sun roof, 6 new tires and a few waterproof/airproof canisters from an Army Supply Wholesaler.  Our friend Jim, at East Coast Flag (732.341.0888), kindly set us up with web site and logo decals for Rover.

For fun, we went crabbing for Blue Claws at Becker's Boats and had a Bud or two with George.  We also went to Great Adventure and rode the newest, oldest and badest roller-coasters.  For practice, we climbed a fake rock wall.   I also forgot to mention that we also went bowling with Marty's Aunt Laine, who is a professional bowler.  While Marty showed off his new Bud Ball, (a lovely bottle of Bud encased in Lucite - sorry I forgot to take a picture before we sacrificed our balls in NJ to lighten the load), Aunt Laine kicked our butts by scoring a mere 196.

Good eats: we got a slice at the Sawmill in Seaside - the best and the biggest slice of pizza in the World.

7/29 - 8/3 Jim, Katie & Alex's, New Fairfield, Connecticut, US

Connecticut. We dropped off some more stuff to lighten our load when we visited Jim, Katie and Alex in New Fairfield.  Marty rigged up the new amplifier and added the skid plates to the bottom of Rover, while Allison worked on the web site.
8/4 - 8/8 Ralph, Patrice & Brendan's, Clifton Park & Troy, New York, US
Christmas in August.  Marty's college roommate, Ralph, conveniently lives about 2 miles from our favorite part supplier, Atlantic British.  So, we loaded up at their warehouse with new rims, sliders, and spare parts for Rover.

Marty gave us a tour of his old stopping grounds in Troy, where he met Wynona Rider during the filming of "The age of Innocence".

Good eats: We got our fill of wings and beer at The Ruck (Marty remembers this place as Sutters...his favorite bar in Troy while he attended RPI).

Thanks to everyone  for visiting the site. Our counter is rolling and has hit over 100 visits as of this morning. I decided to log one more entry before Friday when we head north to Killington, VT for a Land Rover Rally. This could be our last chance for a good shower and decent internet connectivity for a while.  The rally will be our first camping experience since our departure. We rigged up the mosquito netting on top of the rack in preparation and we looked like we were about to set sail rather than sleep up there.  Don't worry - we'll take it down before we get on Highway 87.

Marty's been fighting a serious case of Poison Ivy that he caught in Connecticut while helping Jim and Katie chip wood last week. Marty was determined to capture and mulch every tree not standing. He's great at cutting trees down, as those of you who visited our house on Bull Run Mountain may recall our "million dollar view." However, Mother Nature got the best of him this time. After trying every product within 30 miles of Clifton Park, he found a pricey miracle cure called Zanfel at $30/oz. Unfortunately it couldn't help his right eye once it got into his blood stream so he spent a full day seeking a health clinic that would take new patients.   The steroids prescribed are helping and he's getting better.

Gladys suggested I add travel tips to the site.  So, I'll start with an interesting one that I read in our new Vehicle Dependent - Expedition Guide by Tom Shepard: "Take a 10 or 15 litre plastic lidded container.  Put your washing, the washing powder and water at the beginning of the day with the lid on; at the end of the day's bumping over rough roads the gentle washing-machine action will have worked wonders!"  Funny enough, I've also heard of a similar method used by airplane pilots to make ice cream in the back of airplanes.  So, we're off to Vermont tomorrow morning to do some serious laundry!
